Israel’s foreign minister Yair Lapid has reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to the status quo on the al-Aqsa Mosque compound. It comes as tensions have increased at the holy site during the last few weeks. More than 4,500 Jews made incursions into the site over the Jewish Passover holiday, according to the Islamic Waqf that oversees the compound. It also says more Jews have accessed the site this past year than in previous years - many of them calling for the right to pray - which is hugely provocative to Palestinians.
